It is a port city on the Mediterranean Sea, located in the northwest of Algeria, 432 km from the capital, Algiers, and serves as the capital of the wilaya of the same name, situated along the Gulf of Oran. The city is located at the end of an open bay to the north and is directly dominated to the west by the Aïdour Mountain (or Murdjajo), which rises to a height of 420 meters, as well as by the plateau of Moulay Abdelkader al-Jilani. The urban area extends on both sides of the ravine of the Oued Rhi, which is now covered.
